D. Evelyn Hillwig

D. Evelyn Hillwig, age 94 of Cabot, PA, formerly of Bruin, PA, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2012, at Butler Memorial Hospital.

She was born November 4, 1917 in Chicora, PA, the daughter of Harry G. King and Martha (Hilgar) King.

Evelyn lived in the area all her life, with the exception of the last 10 years that she spent at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot, PA. She graduated from Karns City High School in 1934 and married her husband and best friend, W. Kenneth "Ken" Hillwig on October 11, 1940. She dedicated her life to caring for her family and enjoyed camping at the KOA Campground. Evelyn was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, formerly Mt. Pleasant Church, and participated in various Sunday School classes through the years. She also sang in the church choir and played the piano for services and events.

Evelyn loved caring for her home and always made sure that it was decorated for the holidays. Cooking and baking were just a few of her many talents and she made wonderful homemade bread and rolls, pies and Christmas cookies. She loved flowers and spending time working in her beautiful gardens, and she also enjoyed crocheting.

Those who knew Evelyn will always remember her festive and independent spirit. She loved dressing up and looking her best and was known as a trendsetter-she was one of the first to wear pants when no other woman would! Her family and friends will miss her vivaciousness and will never forget her deep love for them.

Her memory will be carried on by her sons, Dennis L. Hillwig and wife, Rita, of Chambersburg, PA, and Jeffrey W. Hillwig and wife, Cindy, of Parker; grandchildren, Matthew B. Hillwig and fiance, Carri, Troy A. Hillwig and wife, Kelly, Dr. Jolene M. Garcia and husband, Courtney, and Gary A. Hillwig and wife, Tiffiny; and great-grandchildren, Chelsey, Kaylene and Carter Hillwig, and Elena Garcia.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband of 62 years, W. Kenneth "Ken" Hillwig who died March 31, 2003.

Relatives and friends may visit from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Sunday, March 18, 2012, at the Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 102 Argyle Street, Petrolia, PA.

Additional visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Monday, March 19, 2012 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2217 Chicora Road, Chicora, PA with the Rev. Joseph Boomhower officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Cemetery, Chicora, Pennsylvania.
