Norman Deverre King

Norman Deverre King passed away peacefully at Heritage Meadows PCH in Kittanning at the age of 97 on July 11, 2024.

Norman is survived by his wife of 73 years, Donna Jean Uber King, his children, Korwin "Kory" King and wife, Linda of Pittsburgh and Karla Waldo of Morgantown, WV; as well as four grandchildren, Judd Waldo and Mackenzie Waldo of Morgantown, WV, Kelsey Carter of Midland MI, and Colin King of Pittsburgh; and one great-grandchild, Oli Garner of Morgantown, WV.

Norman was preceded in death by his father, Owen Hess King and his mother Olive Shaffer King.

Norman was born in Dubois in 1926 and graduated Kittanning Sr. High in 1944. He received his BA from Indiana State Teachers College in 1948 and his MS in English Literature in 1950. Norman served from 1950 to 1952 in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a Corporal. He was married in Puget Sound Washington just before his deployment to South Korea. After his honorable discharge, Norman taught English at Kittanning Junior High School from 1948 until his retirement in 1987.

A gifted musician, Norman played clarinet and saxophone in the U.S. Army Band and was an original member of the Fireman's Band in Kittanning. He played in marching bands, concert bands and dance bands, including the Joe Alese Combo.

Norman was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Kittanning where he sang in the choir for many years. He loved spending time with his extended family at his camp on the Allegheny River where he enjoyed fishing, boating and swimming.

The King family is extremely grateful for the support of their friends, neighbors and church family, especially Kathy Piechowicz of Kittanning and Norman's cousin Donna Myer of Indiana.

The family will receive friends at Bauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 515 N. McKean St., Kittanning, PA on Monday, July 15, 2024 from 4 PM until the time of funeral services at 7 PM.

Interment will be private at the Greenwood Cemetery in Indiana, PA.

Donations may be made in Norman's memory to the Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter, PO Box 838, Kittanning, PA 16201 in lieu of flowers.
