Janet Arminta Mertz

Janet Arminta Mertz, 81, of Smicksburg, PA passed away on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023 at her home.

She was born May 19, 1942, in Butler, PA, the daughter of Floyd and Maribelle C. (Smith) Dunmire.

Janet was a graduate of Dayton High School and later attended Fredonia State University of New York. She was a resident of Smicksburg since 1979. The church and helping others were paramount in Janet's life. She was a member of the NuMine Church of Nazarene where she was very active with Bible study, Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, work and witness mission trips in India, Africa, South America, and the United States. For 25 years, she was a supervisor of in-home services and worked for Indiana Area Agency on Aging. Janet enjoyed quilting, reading, playing piano, and spending time with family and friends. She was a true supporter of charitable organizations - Wounded Warriors Project, animal causes, and The Blind Association.

Her memory will be cherished by her loving husband, Richard L. Mertz whom she married July 6, 1963; son, Curtis R. Mertz and wife, Tammy L., of Punxsutawney; three daughters, Sarah E. Carlson and husband, Brian, of Linden, IN, Michele R. Kabay and husband, Michael, of Richlands, NC, and Amy A. Stewart and husband, Daniel, of Ashburn, VA; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Vernon Dunmire and wife, Laurie, of Grand Rapids, MI; and two sisters, Eileen Smith and husband, Dale, of Home, PA, and Ion Hoover of Greentown, IN.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023 at the Bauer-Bly Funeral Home, 125 East Main Street, Dayton, PA.

Additional visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of services at 11 AM on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023 at the Smicksburg United Methodist Church, 80 Clarion Street, Smicksburg, PA, 16256, with Pastor Theresa Peace officiating.

Interment will be in Smicksburg Cemetery, Smicksburg, PA.
