Heber Ellsworth George, Jr., 95, of West Lebanon, PA, died Thursday, June 1, 2017 at his home.

He was born October 16, 1921 in Homer City, PA to Charles Heber George and Gertrude Dewey (Clawson) George.

Heber lived in the area most of his life and honorably served in the US Army during World War II. From 1940 to 1959, he worked as a coal miner and also worked as a farmer on his family's farm for many years. Later, Heber worked as a psychiatric aide for Torrance State Hospital for 18 years, retiring in 1985.

Reading was one of Heber's passions and throughout his life he read 6,000 books. He was also a subscriber to many geographic, archeological, historical, military and farming magazines. Heber enjoyed raising cattle and watching them grow up on his farm. He also hunted for arrowheads to add to his extensive collection.

He is survived by his sons, Heber E. George, III, of Shelocta, Richard L. George, of West Lebanon, and Wilson "Terry" George, of West Lebanon; daughters, Carol N. Haag and husband, Richard, of West Lebanon, Kathlene L. Townsend and husband, James, of Spring Church, and Bonnie K. McMichael, of West Lebanon; 19 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Betty L. (Brown) George, whom he married August 16, 1941 and who died February 27, 2009; daughter, Cheryl Darlene George Browning; grandson, Melvin Paul Delo; and brother, Robert C. George.

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, June 30, 2017 at South Bend Cemetery, Shelocta, PA, with Corbin Krug officiating. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard.
