Reed H. "Barney" Verner, 89, of Rural Valley, PA, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013 at his residence.

He was born February 8, 1924 in New Kensington, PA, the son of John Taylor Verner and Valley Lena (McGinnis) Verner.

Barney served in World War II as a member of the Army Infantry and belonged to "Hells on Wheels." He was wounded during his service and received the Purple Heart. Barney was a hard worker all his life and held positions at Megnin Saw Mill in Whitesburg, Cunningham Meats, Lockard Oil, Barker Bus and Trader Horn; he also worked as a security guard. Despite the various jobs he held, his passion was working on the farm and caring for his horses. He was very knowledgeable about plants loved to work in his gardens. Making home remedies was another one of his gifts and he used them on his animals and on himself for his entire life. Barney was a member of the Fundamental Baptist Church for over 40 years and then attended Grace Independent Baptist Church. Faith was very important to him and he showed his love to Jesus everywhere he went.

His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 57 years, Ruth A. (Kaufman) Verner, whom he married December 10, 1955; sons, John Verner, of Export, PA, Randy W. Verner and wife, Jackie, of Elderton, and Terry L. Verner, of Rural Valley; daughters, Judy Corchia, of Arnold, Kathy A. Graham and husband, Allan, of Ford City, Nancy A. Wolfe, of Rural Valley, and Beverly J. Ramer and husband, Mark, of Kittanning; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Laura Such, of Lower Burrell, Jane Divens, of Erie, and Doris Spinks, of Apollo.

Barney was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Ashley M. Ramer, who passed away March 2, 2011; brothers, George, Robert, Gilbert, Zenith and Walker Verner; and sisters, Gladys Weston, Ruth McNutt, Sarah Bolts, Frances McNeal, and Lois Verner.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Clark Chapel of the Bauer Funeral Home, 238 S. Main St., Elderton, PA.

Additional visitation will be from noon until the time of funeral services at 1 PM on Monday, August 26, 2013 at the funeral home with Pastor Nicholas W. Kostella, Jr. officiating.

Burial will be in Whitesburg Presbyterian Cemetery, Kittanning, Pennsylvania, where military honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard.
