Betty Jane Shakley

Betty Jane Shakley, 87, of Emporia, VA, formerly of the Hillville area, Karns City, PA, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Greensville Manor Nursing Home in Emporia, VA.

Her life began in Queenstown, PA, where she was born on the 3rd of April in 1926, the daughter of George W. and Sidney I. "Irene" (King) Lynch.

Betty lived in the Hillville area along the Allegheny River for almost 50 years and was very active in the community. An educator, her love of teaching spanned a number of years at the Sugarcreek Elementary School in Cowansville where she touched many young children's lives as their first grade teacher. Betty was a member of the United Church of Christ in Brady's Bend and was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her favorite pastimes were crocheting and embroidery, and she also enjoyed RV camping with family and friends. Betty possessed a strong will paired with a sweet and caring spirit and will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

She is survived by sons, Richard Dale "Rick" Shakley and wife, Sherri, of Salisbury, MD, Roger Lynn Shakley and wife, Daryla, of Lanexa, VA, and Gerry Lee Shakley and wife, Beverly, of Middletown, MD; grandchildren, Jennifer Shakley, Ryan Shakley and wife, Lynsey, Keith Shakley and wife, Carrie, Erin Shakley and wife, Carla, Cristin Shakley, Brenda Shakley, and Allan Shakley; great-grandson, Dylan Shakley; great-granddaughters Olivia Shakley, Madison Shakley, and Anabelle Shakley.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 48 years, Clarence D. "Dale" Shakley, who passed away July 10, 1997; son, Allan Dean Shakley; brother, Raymond Demer Lynch; and sisters, Ruth Adeline Shakley, Edna May Fair, Mary Genevieve "Gen" Miller, Georgia Irene Lynch, E. Ardelle Flanagan, Anna Steiner and Norma Claudine "Deanie" Johns.

Friends will be received from 12 PM until the time of funeral services at 2 PM on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 102 Argyle Street, Petrolia, PA, with Pastor Pete Sapp officiating.

Burial will follow in Bear Creek Cemetery, Petrolia, PA.
