Munawwar M. Akhtar

Munawwar M. Akhtar, 92, of Mt. Lebanon, PA, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2025 at his home.

He was born on Nov. 26, 1932 in Gujrat, Pakistan, the son of Sardar Begum and Ghulam Ahmad Qureshi.

Munawwar immigrated to the United States in 1980 to pursue a Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. After completing his studies, he began his career with Eichleay Engineering, who also supported him in obtaining U.S. citizenship. His professional journey began as an assistant with Army Engineering containment in Karachi, Pakistan, and later extended across Africa and France, where he worked with various engineering firms specializing in chemical fertilizers, cement, and steel.

Munawwar met the love of his life while ballroom dancing, which they enjoyed for many years. He also enjoyed traveling, country music, line dancing, tennis, and jazzercise. He had a love of reading and learning that he instilled in his family.

His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of nearly 33 years, Zoe (Geidel) Akhtar; step-daughter, Elizabeth Banks and husband, Keith of Mt. Lebanon; grandson, Tyler Banks; along with his children, Afzaal Akhtar of FL, Dr. Nadia (Lee) Fike of Tucson, AZ and Dr. Saadia Akhtar of Idaho.

Munawwar was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Family and friends will be received from 7 - 9 PM on Monday, July 7, 2025 at Bauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 515 N. McKean St., Kittanning, PA.

Additional visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025 from 10 AM until the time of services at 11 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Bryce McMinn and Rev. Matthew Vatalare co-officiating.

Interment will be in Christ Rupp Lutheran Cemetery, Kittanning, PA.
