Elmer F. Steffy

Elmer F. Steffy, 95, of Dayton, PA, died Sunday, September 17, 2017, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

He was born August 21, 1922 in Dayton, PA to James C. and Anna Rebecca (Fleming) Steffy.

A stand-out high school athlete, Elmer graduated from Dayton High School in 1940. A solid representative of the greatest generation, he served during World War II in Europe with the 12th Armored Infantry Division, "The Hellcats." A platoon sergeant, Elmer received the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster upon his discharge. He married Dolly Ishman, the love of his life, on September 12, 1945, and on September 12th of this year they marked their 72nd wedding anniversary.

He was a member of the Dayton United Methodist Church and also the former Dayton Sportsman Club. Elmer worked as a drag line and bulldozer operator, but most local residents will best remember him as the owner of the Steffy Barber Shop in Dayton. Hunting was a favorite hobby of his and he enjoyed spending time at his camp in Cook Forest. Elmer's family and friends will always remember his loving and fun spirit, and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Dolly Thelma (Ishman) Steffy; sons, Dennis D. Steffy and wife, Ginger, of Soldotna, AK, Randee J. Steffy and wife, Margie, of Dayton, PA, and Kevin E. Steffy and wife, Robin, of Dayton, PA; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Bernard Steffy and wife, Mona, of Dayton, PA, and Dale Steffy, of Kittanning.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, James C. Steffy; brothers, Edward J. and John W. Steffy; sister, Bernice Huffman; and one infant brother.

Family and friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at the Dayton United Methodist Church, 105 E. Church Street, Dayton, PA.

Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at the Dayton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Howard officiating.

Interment will follow in Emory Chapel Cemetery, Dayton, PA, where honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard.
