Eugene W. Schaeffer
Eugene W. Schaeffer, 73, of Kittanning, PA, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Kittanning Health and Rehab Center.Eugene entered the world on March 19, 1952, in Kittanning. He was the cherished son of Merle W. and M. Alberta (Ramale) Schaeffer. Raised in Brick Church and spending the last 21 years in Kittanning with his Lifesharing Through Family Living family, his days were shaped by family, faith, and familiar faces. Eugene was a member of Butler City Church. When he couldn't attend services in person, he continued to worship faithfully by watching online each week. He previously attended St. Michael's Lutheran Church.
Eugene was born with Down Syndrome, but his life was defined by love, not limitations. He had a large circle of people who loved him deeply-family, caregivers, friends, and members of the community. He worked at Progressive Workshop until 1999 when he began attending the LifeSteps Armstrong Community Outreach Program, ACOR. Eugene especially loved coloring with markers in his tablet, drinking pop, bowling and cheering for his beloved Pittsburgh Penguins, proudly collecting memorabilia throughout his life -a collection that would make even the most devoted of fans jealous. What Eugene cherished even more than hockey was spending time with the people he loved. He found joy in being part of everyday moments- family dinners, holidays, vacations, or just sitting nearby with his tablet, markers and pop. Eugene showed love in quiet ways-like a touch to the cheek and a kiss, a big smile, a handshake, or a simple "I love ya." His place in the family was not just important-it is irreplaceable.
He also found immeasurable joy in the love and care of Scott and Jeanne Daubenspeck of Kittanning, who not only welcomed Eugene into their family but truly shared life with him. The three of them were inseparable-whether it was running errands, celebrating birthdays, going on family vacations, or simply relaxing at home. Jeanne and Scott cared for Eugene with unwavering devotion, and their love for him was matched only by his love for them. Eugene was like a son, brother, and grandfather in their family. Their children-Brandon (Katelyn) Petras of Kittanning, Christina (Tyler) Toy of Kittanning, and Cory (Rachel) Petras of Lower Burrell- held a special place in his heart. Their children lovingly called him "Pappy Eugene": Maddox, Lennox, Paxton, Cooper, Parker, Nolan, and Connor. He adored them all-and they adored him right back. Their conversations with Eugene often circled around bowling scores, hockey, and his simple but sincere "I love ya." Family and friends who were part of Eugene's life would agree that they are better people today because of knowing him.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, who now welcome him home. He is survived by his brother, Charles A. Schaeffer of Ford City; sister, Anna Mae Allen of Virginia; and nephew, Jason Allen.
Family and friends will be received from 11 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Bauer Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc, 515 N McKean Street, Kittanning, PA with Pastor Brandon Petras officiating.
Contributions may be made in Eugene's memory to Butler City Church, 311 2nd St, Butler, PA 16001.
