Ruby Irene Clever, 96, of Arlington, VA, formerly of Monroeville, PA, passed away Friday, May 18, 2018, in Falls Church, VA.

She was born March 27, 1922 in Dayton, PA, to Miles Washington Schrecengost and Venice Irene (Bowser) Schrecengost.

Ruby grew up in Dayton and graduated from Dayton High School in 1939. She served in the US Navy as a switchboard operator throughout World War II and following the war moved to Harrisburg to continue working as a switchboard operator. Ruby married her high school classmate, John D. Clever, Sr., on June 3, 1950 and they enjoyed 52 years of marriage living in Monroeville, PA. During those years, Ruby worked as a switchboard operator at Hornes Department Store.

She was a very active member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Turtle Creek, where she was a church deacon, served on the Centennial Committee and visited shut-ins. Ruby also spent many years as a Troop Leader with the Girl Scouts and participated in Round Up. Gardening and crafting were two of her favorite hobbies. In her later years she especially loved working on plastic needle point, which she continued to do up until just a few months before her passing. Ruby was also known for her good cooking and making the best cherry pies. Ruby was loved by everyone she knew and will be best remembered for being a wonderful listener.

Ruby will be remembered with love by her daughter, Debora Wren and husband, William Christopher, of Arlington, VA, son, John D. Clever, Jr. and wife, LuAnn, of Kittanning; grandchildren, David Clever, Melissa Clever Jones, Emily Wren Kos and husband, John, William Wren and Melody Wren; great-grandchildren, Andrew Jones, Timothy Jones, John Christopher Kos and Margot Ruby Kos; and brother, Miles Schrecengost and wife, Rose Marie, of Templeton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, John D. Clever, Sr. who died February 23, 2003; brother, Bobby Ray Schrecengost; and sisters, Gladys Smith, LaRue Yingling, Velma Walker, Fern Snyder, LaWave Cogley and Shirley Baker.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday, May 25, 2018 at Bauer-Bly Funeral Home, Inc, 125 East Main Street, Dayton, PA 16222.

Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of funeral service at 11 AM on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at the funeral home, with the Pastor David D. Murphy officiating.

Interment will be in Concord Cemetery, Dayton, PA where military honors will be presented by the Armstrong County American Legion Honor Guard.
