Robert E. Bendis

Robert E. Bendis, 80, of West Lebanon, PA, passed away Sunday, August 20, 2017 at UPMC Magee Hospital.

He was born July 11, 1937 on a farm outside of Iselin, PA, the son of Michael and Mary (Adams) Bendis.

Robert attended Iselin Grade School and Elders Ridge High School, and played baseball on the Ridges' 1955 undefeated team coached by Bill Heard. He attended night school at Penn State, John Carroll University, Western Reserve and Tennessee College while working as a research lab technician. Robert worked at Mallory Battery, Horizon, Inc. and Harshaw Industries in Cleveland, Ohio, and Ortec, Inc. in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where he received two patents.

He graduated from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1970 with a Bachelor's of Science in chemistry and earth space science, and he later earned his Master's Degree in education. Robert taught high school at Jim Thorpe, Plum Borough, and Franklin Regional. He was an avid golfer, loved to travel, and was of the catholic faith. Robert was extremely proud of his grandchildren who all have earned college degrees.

He will be remembered with love by his wife, Linda (Snyder) Bendis; sons, Jeffrey Bendis and wife, Patricia, of Mt. Lebanon, and David Bendis and wife, Kim, of New Kensington; daughter, Cheryl Orlowski and husband, David, of North Apollo; step-daughter, Alexis Semuskie, of West Lebanon; grandchildren, Molly Gilleland and husband, Matthew, of Atlanta, GA, Jeffrey Altmire, Jr., of Atlanta, GA, Meaghann, Chloe, Madison and Grant Bendis, all of New Kensington, and Haley Bendis, of Torrance, CA; and step-grandchildren, Joshua Orlowski and wife, Kristie, of London, England, Courtney Orlowski, of Pittsburgh, and Alexis Orlowski, of Pittsburgh.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brother, William Bendis; and his former wife and mother of his children, Alice Janet (Zadravec) Bendis.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Clark Chapel of the Bauer Funeral Home, 238 S. Main St., Elderton, PA.

Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of the Funeral Liturgy at 11 AM on Friday, August 25, 2017 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Douglas E. Dorula officiating.
