Sloan R. Harkleroad, 86, formerly of Elderton, PA, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the Southwest Veterans Center in Pittsburgh.

He was born December 24, 1930 in Elderton, PA, the son of Grover and Ethel (Burkett) Harkleroad.

Sloan was a lifelong resident of the area and after high school joined the US Air Force, where he served for 20 years as a staff sergeant and equipment operator. He also worked at R&P Coal Company for 21 years as an underground mine mechanic and at Shriver Bus Company as a driver until he retired in 2003. In his younger years, Sloan enjoyed camping and traveling, and was active in the community, serving on the Elderton Fire Department and belonging to the Elderton American Legion and United Rockville Lutheran Church.

His memory will be carried on with love by his loving wife of more than 54 years, Nancy E. Harkleroad; sons, Norman W. Harkleroad and wife, Mary Beth, of Bridgeville and Lee T. Harkleroad and wife, Marcy, of Kittanning; daughter, Grace Dillen-Evans and husband, Mark, of Brush Valley; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Howard and Clements Harkleroad; one infant brother; and half-brother, Chancey Harkleroad.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Monday, April 17, 2017 at Clark Chapel of the Bauer Funeral Home, 238 S. Main Street, Elderton, where a Firemen's service will take place at 7:30 PM.

Additional visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of funeral services at 11 AM on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Larry Kemp officiating.

Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Ford City, Pennsylvania, where military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Honor Guard.
