L. Jean Rupert

L. Jean (Altman) Rupert, age 88, of Shelocta, PA, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at her residence with family by her side.

She was born May 28, 1925 in McCance, Westmoreland County, PA to Francis G. "Frank" and Mahala (Held) Altman

Jean lived in the area most of her life and graduated from Elderton High School in 1942. She received her Bachelor's degree in business education from IUP in 1946 and in her early career taught business education at Somerset High School and Elderton High School. Jean married Herman E. Rupert on June 14, 1946 and together they enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and traveling throughout the United States. Jean later returned to teaching, working as a substitute teacher for the Armstrong School District for 25 years until her retirement in 1990.

Jean was a member of the Elderton Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder and belonged to the Women's Organization. Her other memberships included the Elderton American Legion Auxiliary-Post 918 and the Elderton Fire Department Auxiliary, where she was a former a secretary. Jean also served one term as the Judge of Elections for the Republican Party of Plumcreek Twp. In her leisure time, she enjoyed sewing and gardening. Above all, Jean cherished her family and the time she spent with them.

She is survived by her son, Gregory Eugene Rupert and wife, Carole, of Rossmoor, CA; daughters, Pamela J. Bryan, of Shelocta, Deborah L. McCully, of Tempe, AZ, Marcia E. Perry and husband, John, of Elderton, and Bonita S. "Boni" Oian and husband, Doug, of Boerne, TX; grandchildren, Lisa McWilliams, Jennifer Crytzer, Christina Casses, Joshua Casses, Sara Casses, Chad Oian, Melissa Rupert and Nathaniel Rupert; great-grandchildren, Michael, Jason and Kerri Ann McWilliams, Ethan and Addison Crytzer, Jordan Casses, Grant and Jace Casses, and Abraham DeAlmeida Jr.; sister-in-law, Louise Altman, of Elderton; nieces, Carole, Kathy, Sandra and their families; and furry friends, Snoopy and Abigail.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Herman E. Rupert, who died February 22, 2009, and brother, Stanley L. Altman.

An open house will be held in memory of Jean from 2-4 PM on Sunday, June 9 at Jean's home, 374 Old Elderton Hill Rd., Shelocta.
