Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home in Petrolia originated as a funeral home built in 1948 by Eugene M. Hepler. Located at 102 Argyle Street, the center of a thriving industrial hub, the funeral home became an important business and social institution in the community. In June 1965, a fire nearly destroyed the structure and Mr. Hepler made numerous renovations to bring the building back into working order. Rimersburg native Richard D. Hillis purchased the funeral home from Bernice Hepler, Eugene's widow, in the May of 1965. Dick's ownership and service to the Petroleum Valley and surrounding communities spanned over four decades. He and his wife, Lucy, proudly called Petrolia their home for 40 years. In December 2010, Dick sold the funeral home to Jack Bauer, and the name was changed to Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home. We pledge to carry on the tradition of excellence that Mr. Hillis started, and continue to lead and innovate while maintaining the same high standards of service. Everyone at the Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home is proud to uphold this heritage and commitment to the community.
